Okay, so... several ideas for a story:
Horror:
-Professor becomes his obsession.
-Town goes mad, one man's psychological journey.
-Mysterious murder, one detective's cosmological horror.
Sword and Sorcery:
-Elder God eats a knight, grants him superpowers.
-Low Fantasy sort of "Free Company".
SciFi:
-Scientist engineers himself to perfection.
I dunno how any of these will work out... short story? Novel? Novella? Ugh, I gotta work with them. To my SG friends, I say: HELP!
