I got a new piercing. Well, really redid an old piercing that didn't heal right and that I took out about 4 years ago. Tis the rook. It's doing really well this time, and my piercist said that from my description it sounded like the needle was dull the first time I got it done, and that could have been where some of the problems came from. Curse you, piercing parlors that use inferior brands of needles!! God, I so love the shop I am using now.

Still haven't gotten the tat shaded. Maybe after Christmas.

Also, I found a Mexican free-tail bat the other day. I kept it overnight, because at first I thought it might be sick, and I tried to contact the local bat rehabber (but she never got back to me.) It was crawling all over the place in its box the second night though, and I released it. I think it had just gotten itself grounded in the hallway between apartments and didn't have anything to climb up on so it could take off again. It was cute as hell, I really liked having it around. I want to volunteer with the rehabber next summer when there will be lots of orphaned pups, and maybe get a subpermitee license so I can take them home to care for them until it's time for them to learn to fly and catch their own insects. Gotta get my rabies vaccination first, though.
I swear, bats are some of the most interesting animals out there, they have been of great interest to me since 4th grade.

Happy camper.

I got some fish that are worth $300 a pair from work. Unfortunately they are both males, so I may have some trouble breeding them whatever. The first came in as a fluke when our supplier made a mistake, the second was part of a pair my boss ordered so I could have a female for him, but one of my coworkers put them in a container with no lid until I came to pick them up later that day. They are very good jumpers. By the time I got there, only the male was left. Can you say pissed? Oh well, I'm in contact with a US breeder of these lovely fish who is sending me females within the next couple of months, when they are mature enough to ship. I'm so proud to have these, only a handful of folks in the US do. They were once thought to be extinct, so I'm proud to be one of the hobbyists who will hopefully be perpetuating the species in captivity.
They are Betta rubra, BTW. They are about 2.5"-3" long. The pics do them absolutely NO justice. love

Yawning display. They are mouthbrooders, so displaying their large mouths and advertising their egg-holding capacity wins the males mates. Bubblenesting betta species do flare, but they do not do the yawning display common among mouthbrooders.

And what would a post about my aquatic friends be without a pic of Stagger the mantis??

$300 Bettas eh? Nice.

Do they have the same fighting instinct as most other betta species?

Not so much. Most betta species aren't that aggressive, actually. Territorial certainly, but domestic B. splendens were specifically bred for fighting for many generations, and all fancy types we have today, even though they are no longer used for fighting, still come from those original fighter lines and retain that aggression to some degree. Most wild bettas are territorial in the way gouramis or dwarf cichlids are; they will stick up for their territory and their mates, but it's mostly bluff, and disputes rarely come to blows. When fights do occur, one will step down as soon as it realizes it is beat. smile
