This week's literary tidbit come from Allan Sherman's:

The Rape of the A*P*E*
The Official History of the Sex Revolution 1945-1973
The Obscening of America
An R*S*V*P* Document

***American Puritan Ethic
****Redeeming Social Value Pornography

And I quote:

All governments sell protection to their citizens, but Americans are the most protected people on the world. Our government spends billions annually to protect us against The Enemy. That's why we must have an Enemy at all times--it's basic to the economy. As soon as we've used up an old Enemy, our vigilant officials look among all the countries of the world and find us a new Enemy. They never pick weak Enemies, like Canada or Luxembourg. All enemies must be at least powerful enough to make our annual defense budget seem plausible. Once an Enemy is chosen, the publicity machine goes to work, and pretty soon we are all bristling with hostility and bloodlust, ready to spend any amount to keep from being overrun by those foreign bastards. If we had just one year without an Enemy, the cut in our defense budget would be enough to bankrupt the nation. Fortunately we have so far avoided such an embarrassing situation.

Thirty-two years later, it's still true.
