SYH needs a beater.
Nothing too fancy mind you. A Great American Sedan (preferably GM, but a non-rusted out Mopar would be acceptable) would be just fine. A Great American Suburban (3/4-ton, 4WD, stick) would be better.
NO FORDS. None. No Ford derivatives either. No Lincolns, no Mercurys, no Edsels. If it has a hint of One Rotunda Drive, I do not want it...unless the price was right. Who am I to pass up a great deal?
To prove just how much I have improved in purchasing a vehicle, here are two examples of my automotive purchasing prowess:
'67 C20 ($2400, 2/99)-- *looks at padded dash, intact trim, gearshift, manual choke, mostly-intact cab corners, smog sticker, and gas tank behind seat*
Here's my check.
It should be noted the front brakes were new, the master cylinder & both front wheel cylinders were shot, the engine gulped oil, the u-joints were shot, the center support was going, and the interior stank.
Yep, that one decision is still burning a hole in my pocket. I wouldn't have it any other way (it's a classic!
), but it's still been my most-expensive purchase to date. Lessons learned? Numerous. I'll boil them down to one phrase: Test Drive the Vehicle Before Buying.
'83 Caprice ($400, 7/04)--Hmm...burns lots of oil, trans doesn't shift worth a damn, lousy CCC is shot, brakes are okay. Nah, I won't take it. {guy offers it for $250} Hmm... {$150?} No, I don't think so.
Hey, I already have one money pit. I don't need two. Besides, who wants to spend $1000 on a trans rebuild for a $150 car? True I could've slipped a junkyard 700R4 in there & called it good, but I'm glad I didn't. That car would not have made the 100-odd miles from Lowell to Wixom. Lousy computer controlled carburetors...
So if anyone just happens to have a '77-90 GM B-body (Caprice & its cousins) or a '73-91 K/V20 (Suburban, manual trans almost guaranteed to hook me) lying around, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands...if the price is right.
(Other years are fine, like '60-72 Suburbans or '91-96 B-bodies.)
I almost forgot--if there's one vehicle I pine for, it's an IH Travelall with 392, 5spd, 4WD, 3/4-ton. They're the bee's knees. Butt-ugly too.
Okay, enough of the automotive kick. I'm off to sit on my deck & read. If it's raining, I guess I'll go to the mall & be a consumer whore.
