My dog was whining from lack of exercise, and I took him out, to an unlikely little scrap of a field next to a 7-11 up the street. It's a vacant, grassy lot, surrounded by tired old buildings, with trash interwoven in the vegetation.
Somehow, when I go there at night, I can light a cigarette, traipse around, and forget those buildings nearby. The wind blows so cold it gives me earaches. My nose runs like a faucet, but as I stand amongst the beer cans and candy wrappers and watch Oasis run with his tail straight out and his nose to the wind like a born hunter, I'm fuckin' glad to be here, and to have him.
I run back and forth with him and try not to fall on my face, and I notice as the days go by and I bring him here more often, that we're becoming attuned to each other. I run, switch directions, and he's right there next to me, even if he can't hear my calling to him. I stop, and he stops too, ready to go back home and endure the boredom, simply because it's home, and I let him lie on the couch with me :-)

It's really fucking hard to cheer oneself up, but he helps the odds, that's for sure.
