Post-Op

I am at a friend's apartment recovering from yesterday's little surgery and the past week's madness. After moving in 100+ degree heat, working at the bar, defending my thesis, and going under, I am beyond exhausted.

Here is what my last week looked like:

Timeline

Sunday
7pm- Turn in Thesis
7:30pm- Drink margaritas. The lack of food and stress mean that 1 1/2 is enough to make me officially wasted. (Yes, I am a pitifully cheap date.)
9pm- My boyfriend, S., manages to get me back to my apartment and we start packing.
3am- We finish most of the packing and collapse into bed, but it is too hot to sleep.

Monday
8am- We wake up and go for more packing supplies and coffee.
12pm- My friend M. arrives and we take everything down to the curb.
1pm- The wait for the moving truck begins. It can arrive anytime between 1-3. The New York heatwave is official and the temperature starts to climb to 100 and just keeps climbing.
1:35pm- I start to panic that the truck will not arrive. M. tells me that I cannot officially panic until 2:45.
1:40pm- M. plays my father's guitar and we order food.
2:45pm- I am officially panicking.
3:10pm- The truck company says that the truck has been delayed and will be there in 1/2 an hour. It is very, very hot and we cannot leave the stuff unattended, besides, I've already sold the airconditioner, so there's no point going inside anyway.
3:40pm- The truck has not arrived. The truck company says it will be there in 10 min.
4:00pm- The truck finally arrives and we start loading everything.
4:20pm- Arrive at the storage facility and unload.
9:30pm- S. and I return to my apartment to get the rest of my stuff. We start to walk towards the subay and realize it is impossible. We call a cab and load it with everything going to Germany, my dirty laundry, books to be mailed to Deutschland, and his suitcase. We arrive at a friend's apartment uptown and immediately turn on the air conditiioner, peel off our clothes, scrub as many layers of skin off as possible, and collapse.

Tuesday
6:30am- Wake up and go to dinner, so S. can catch 8:30am bus back to D.C.
8:00am-12pm- Meet R. & K. for coffee and help K. do last minute errands before she moves. We say goodbye and realize we don't know when or where we'll see each other. It is already deathly hot.
5:00pm- Go to pick up bike from shop and put it in storage. I am covered in sweat. The Con-Ed emergency vehicles have blocked off the street on 5th ave where the bike shop is, and everyone is waiting for the grid to go out.
6:30pm- Return to aparment to clean and get my deposit. The sun is going down, but the heat stays. I really miss my airconditioner.

Wednesday
10:00am- Post Office to return Cable Modem. It is hot.
11:00am- Bank to cash security deposit. It is even hotter.
1:00pm- Dentist for long overdue cleaning. I am glad to be in the air conditioning. This is the most relaxing thing I have done all week.
4:00pm- Library to return overdue books. Slick with sweat and light-headed from not eating. It is too hot to eat.
5:00pm- Work at the bar. I am glad to be at work because it is cold.

Thursday
10:00am- Wake up and get coffee.
11:00am- Realize my thesis defense is in 5 hours and that I haven't prepared my statement.
3:30pm- Arrive downtown to get coffee on my way to my defense. Both Starbucks at Union Square are closed due to electricity issues. A man snaps a picture of me screaming expletives as I realize the 2nd one is closed. He is just waiting for people to do this, so that he can make some cute little documentary. I am not in the mood to be amused. I realize that the Starbucks is in the same building where I am suppossed to have surgery in the morning. I wonder what will happen, but I don't have time to worry about it. I run to Whole Foods, which mercifully seems to have retained power, and manage to get some coffee.
3:45pm- Wipe off the sweat in the girls bathroom, change clothes and apply makeup.
4:00pm- Defend thesis. The power is reduced in the building so that the air seems to be barely on. By the time the defense is over, my new clothes are stuck to me. We are all dripping sweat.
6:00pm- Work at the bar. Con-ed has warned us that the electricity could go off at any moment.

Friday
5:30am- Wake up and get ready to go to the hospital.
6:30am- Check in at the hospital, where the electricity is functioning.
7:30-8:30am- Argue with 5 different nurses about taking out my piercings.
11:30am- In recovery and drugged on Percoset. My piercings are intact.
12:30pm- R. takes me home. The heat wave has broken. The high today will hover around 90.

For those who asked, the thesis defense went very well. I got a high pass and it was actually a very pleasant experience. The surgery also went well, though it couldn't be considered pleasant. The painkillers are making me slow and tired ( I don't understand why anyone likes to feel this way- give me caffeine anyday.) For the moment, I can only vaguely appreciate the accomplishments. Mostly, I am just bone-dead exhausted and glad that it is all over.

But its not quite over- My sister is arriving tonight for an impromptu visit. I need to finish 2 papers before I leave and I'm scheduled to work almost every night this week. I imagine that I won't be writing anything here until after I arrive in Deutschland and recover from the jetlag! Then, I will very gladly start a new chapter of my life. Until then, cheers!
