I saw a movie the other night that changed me...and horrified me. I was going to make a post that stated DON'T EVER WATCH THIS MOVIE GIRLS!!!! Then...I thought some more and I think this movie has value, in its own raw..sick...and demented way. It's a french flick, called Irreversible...and there is a no-holds-barred rape scene in it. It is probably the most miserable thing I have ever held my eyes open through puke

After I recovered and reflected on it, I came to this conclusion:
Women are raised to fear rape...some of us have even experienced it...its terrifying, brutal, life altering...and to some it's even unfathomable...I may be wrong, but I haven't seen a movie or tv show produced in mainstream America that more than hints, or flashes an image that a rape has occured. (I realize I haven't seen everything smile ) We are left to imagine it, and in most cases accept that it "probably won't happen to us" We live in a CENSORED country. This is good in some ways I am sure, I certainly don't want to be assaulted with these images on a daily basis. BUT how can we truly grasp the gravity of this type of assault without seeing it or experiencing it? Are we taking the necessary steps to avoid this risk at all costs??

In France, they don't have this censorship, so in Irreversible they show an entire rape...start to finish...very very realistic...so much so that it makes you want to jump into the tv and save the girl...now...as punishing as it was to watch...I feel that it was important...it made this possibility more "real" to me, it makes second guess decisions to walk alone late at night. It makes me value all the little things that my boyfriend does to make sure I am safe...

So, I leave it up to you...watch it or don't...but please ladies, do find a way to make this possibility real in your mind and take the necessary precautions...

Well said. I've never heard of the film, but it sounds worth watching, at least for the purpose of being more aware. Thanks for the entry, I hope many people get to read it. smile
