So, I guilted rawr_ima_monster into coming to the Social Distortion show with me. Thankfully he enjoyed it, as did I. Three giant shots of Cuervo and three Makers and Coke later (the last shot being completely unnecessary, thanks Dave
)...I really, really enjoyed the show.
The Explosion opened and were ok. Tiger Army was next and they were awesome. A great mix of rockabilly/psychobilly/country/punk. I've never seen a stand-up bass get run around a stage so much before. Any band that comes out to the strains 'Angel of Death' by Hank Williams Sr. is aces in my book and they didn't disappoint.
Social Distortion was great. Mike and the boys were tight and effortless as they played a lot of the new CD as well as all the old favorites. I stood up and sang along to 'Prison Bound' and 'Ring of Fire' and 'Story of my Life.' I was a crazy-type person (and yes, I'm guessing the tequila loosened the inhibitions just a tad...as tequila is want to do.)
However, both Dave and I were rather appalled at the lack of crowd reaction. Typical LA. A drunk group in front of us stood up most of the show, but that was pretty much it for the entire upper deck. People were actually wanting them to sit down?!? Even the guys next to me looked bored through most of the show. I mean seriously, why the hell would you come to see two awesome, rockin bands and then sit on your hands stone-faced the entire show. Screw that. I've always been one to rather unabashadly bang my head and let loose--I mean within reason, I'm not going to ruin someone else's time by being an inconsiderate, unaware asshole like we've all had to endure, but at the same time this is a live fucking rock show...at least pretend like you're alive. Bah...we both had a good time regardless.
I bought two shirts, because I'm a swag whore. And Dave thought SWAG Whore would be a great name for a band, which it is. We avoided the crowds and went to Denny's to eat a late dinner. All in all, a great time.
Neko Case is this Saturday and I'm very much looking forward to it. And I will be heading back to the Wiltern to see none other than Marilyn Manson just before Christmas, because really, isn't that the best time of year to spread peace, joy and dead squishy things?
