What are the odds of a full-grown tree falling in a forest for no apparent reason?
What are the odds of you being in the vicinity of the tree at the exact moment it fell?
If there was no wind blowing, and you had to choose a side of the tree on which to stand, what are the odds of the tree falling on you?
And if you were with 3 other friends, and the tree hit two of you - wait that ones easy: 50%...
And of all times to fall, the odds of it happening at midnight in the pitch black, while, all of you were sleeping, only to be awoken by a horrific crunching/snapping sound, and allowed a full 2 second pause to hear it tearing through the trees overhead, but unable to determine if it was falling toward you?
I can't decide if I am lucky or unlucky. We were training in the mountains and had been bedded down for about three hours. A coworker had asked me to trade places with him when we set up camp so he didn't have to move all his gear around in the darkness. I agreed and we all began to get comfy. It had rained on us all for 24 hours and we were freezing so we all put up ponchos, stripped off our wet clothes and climbed into sleeping bags for what was to become a fucking full-blown nightmare. Just as above, at midnight a large tree fell diagonally across our layup site. A large branch broke off high above and fell on my friend next to me, busting open his head and badly bruising his hip. The large trunk portion of the tree fell across my back and crushed me into the earth.I was gasping for breath and almost unconscous when, and I've no idea how, the three of them managed to raise the tree two inches off of me just enough that I could scurry out from under it - then it was medevac time and off to the ER for the next 8 hours...
All said and done - I am still invincible. The Dr.s said a mortal man would not have survived. I, however, limp home with a sprained back, bruised ribs, black eyes and lots and lots of percocet.... One foot to the right and the tree would have smashed my skull like a melon. One foot to the left and my friend would have been impaled by a sharp limb that buried in the ground next to him...
Lucky or unlucky?
