Been very busy lighting at work and trying to work on lighting for a friend's Halloween house party on my free time, which has been more like working for free whenever I have the time. There's a lot of thought going into this party from everyone involved but very little that's actually being done about it--more talk and less work is what it's been so far. I'm all for Halloween, but if you want to achieve at creating a certain kind of ambience for your party, you have to be willing to spend the time, money, and effort at making these ideas come to fruition. I've accepted the offer to help them with the lighting, and considering my current work schedule and available resources, I've put in as much as I can and more on my part. I'm just not very confident that everyone else is pulling their share of the weight to make this party happen (the theme is Twisted Fairy Tales). I believe that there needs to be someone like a production designer or art director to oversee everything and guide everyone to the main objective or theme: Twisted Fairy Tales. Otherwise, it all gets jumbled up, mixed around, and looking like some hodgepodge of Halloween knick-knacks and tchotchkes from kitschy holiday novelty stores. Maybe I'm just being a nick-picky control freak but this is why I hated group projects in school, it just seems like the democratic process doesn't facilitate the creative process very well. I really don't mind following someone else's direction to help materialize their vision, but if I'm working with others, I think everyone needs to be on the same page and contribute their fair share of the work other than yip-yapping about how "it would be cool if . . ." What would be cool is if they actually did it. As the sayings go, "put your money where your mouth is," "you can talk the talk but can you walk the walk," and "it's good to will, but it's better to do." Oh well, it's Halloween, and their party is going to look well lit. That, I can assure you.
