I went and saw The Devil's Rejects tonight with some fine folks from work. It was approximately a million times better than House of 1000 Corpses, but it would be pretty hard not to be an improvement. I'm still not much for what I call 'cruel horror', but for a loving ode to splatter pics (and as the Thelma & Louise of the genre), it was actually pretty enjoyable.

I also had some excellent sushi at lunch. I'm so glad you can get decent sushi in this town now.

A while ago, a certain Dogslife urged me to give the White Stripes a second chance. I picked up their latest album, on which I dug about half the tracks, and decided I had underestimated the group. I investigated an earlier album (De Stijl) at the Dog's continued prompting. This was interesting to me because, while I didn't find the album engaging musically, it did suggest that what I thought were misguided flirtations with country, bluegrass, and blues (and other music for uplifting gormandizers) was actually a cornerstone of the band's identity all along. That is, they weren't fakin' it.

It reminded me of the Blues Explosion. Sadly, I don't care for the Blues Explosion.

HOWEVER... after listening to the album and deciding maybe my journey into trying to understand the Stripes was over, I saw the video for Fell In Love With A Girl. Not only have I always admired this as a brilliant video, but I have some fond memories of jamming the tune out with my last band. (I think that we had long broken up under less than friendly terms, and we hashed this one out on stage during an impromptu acoustic reunion gig when some hatchets got buried.)

After hearing that song again, I decided that I wanted to go out and grab that record. So the Stripes - a band I'm on record as never caring for - are getting a third shot to win me over. The world is a crazy place.

(But mainly I'm doing it so the Dog will still like me and want to be my friend. biggrin)

Heheh. A few days ago Katie's mom said that Katie is gonna wake up soon, look around and just say "Where the fuck am I?" smile It's true though. She'll be fine and all this will just be a footnote. A painful one to experience, but it will just be a small part of the story that is the rest of her life.
