Oh where to begin?
I actually missed a good portion of the show, because I got recruited to drive everyone back and forth between the venue and the hotel. I missed Strapt's set because I kinda had Cypress Hill and the Filthee Immigrants in the van. Imagine being someone who hasn't smoked weed in over 8 years...now imagine that person being in a van with the aforementioned people.
Yes, even though I didn't smoke, I got stoned as hell just from being there.
At one point, we were stopped at a red light in Waikiki, Sen Dog sees some random college-age guy on the sidewalk with a Cypress Hill shirt on. He jumps out of the van, walks over, says he likes the guys shirt, gets back in the van and we drove off. I don't think the guy knew who the hell he was.
So, I dropped those guys back at the venue, then immediately back to the hotel to pick up Warren G and his crew. Warren spent most of the trip giving me shit, all in fun, but I was so tired (and still somewhat stoned from driving the other guys around) that I was just getting irritated by it. He did have some hilarious tour stories though.
Once I got him to the venue, I saw Gypsy, Hopey, and Nivoldoog. Hung with them for a bit, then the Reyes Brothers (Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace) went on. Holy shit those guys were awesome! Turns out, this was the first time they'd performed their material anywhere!
Right after their set, B Real went on doing his new solo stuff. At various points, Mellow Man Ace, Filthee and Sun Doobie of the Filthee Immigrants, and a "new MC on the scene that we're breaking in right now" would join in for a song...then the moment everyone was hoping would happen: B Real gets on the mic and says "since Sen Dog is here, ya'll mind if we bust out some old shit?" Sen runs on stage and just yells "how I could just kill a man!" which immediately led into a 4 song Cypress Hill reunion. Finally B Real does a quick solo freestyle and walks off stage with everyone tripping out over what just happened.
After a scene like that, Warren G's set was incredibly disappointing. He did some new shit, then some old shit, pretty much just standing, by himself, in the middle of the stage. Not a very impressive live show by any stretch of the imagination.
This is one of those rare shows that almost no one went to (final count was less than 500, I'm going to have a serious talk with my friend who was hired as the publicist for the promoter), but those who were there will be talking about it for a long long time. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me, and other than during drive-time, didn't have time to get autographs or get pictures taken with any of the guys.
They'll all be back though, and my band will be opening the show next time.
