I just finished watching the second half of "The Miles Davis Story" on Bravo. And while I knew how hip Miles was before, this documentary further clarified everything. And right before I saw it, I was listening to Anti-Pop Consortium's "Tragic Epilogue". And after viewing it, I saw this incredible album in the same light as Miles' attitude and feeling and utter compassion to change things.

Miles once said, "I don't play ballads because I love ballads." This defines everything that WAS Miles. He would never let himself sit in something for too long no matter how much he loved it. If one word could define Miles, it would have to be "change". And I see this trend continuing with Anti-Pop Consortium.

Here we have a group that lifted hip-hop off of its face and mixed everything up, fucked around with the format, and created something beat poets would drool over. First and foremost Anti-Pop Consortium is a consortium of bringing poetry back to hip-hop. Just look at some of their lyrics to see. They took a look at hip-hop and decided to hit the horse and fix it up. Theirs is truly unique and is highly recommended to anyone regardless of what music one enjoys. If you enjoy words, you will dig this record. And as far as the change goes, you can hear big differences in their two full length LPs. "Tragic Epilogue" barely resembles "Arryhmia". While both have an air of simplicity in the production, they are quite different in their instrumental formats. And then if you hear their "The Ends Against The Middle" EP, which is mostly instrumental, you will be hit with change again.

Just had to give a shout out for this band that continues to show me hip-hop's potential. Not like they are the only hip-hop group I am into, but they are the ones that knock me off my feet more than any other. (And they are NYC boyz).

Q: Vinyl or CD?

My composition teacher used his Line 6 delay last night...with his viola. He also uses a little korg number to make some beautifully thrashing sounds. I joined him on laptop. Very fun. He told me I have a "good ear" which is a tremendous thing to hear from him, as he improvises with tons and tons of famous people.
