at some point, on some timeline, one of the abe's or one of the aaron's had to have betrayed their better judgement and told granger about the box. that's kind of the initial rift that comes between the two of them, and what leads to their ultimate seperation at the end

they were drugging their doubles and storing them in various places of the house. when aaron's wife complains about hearing animals in the attic, she is really hearing abes and aarons scuttling around up there

i'm still not 100% about how the failsafe box worked, or what purpose it served. you should check out the primer forum, or listen to the commentaries, for further insight
