i'm really happy that i decided to take the train on thursday night. the first thing i did when i got off the train in minot on friday morning was to go to the nursing home to see my grandparents. grandpa was having a good day. the hospice nurse came in to do some initial paperwork. she kept saying that hospice provides "comfort care". we all know what that means. it was hard hearing my grandfather struggle to decide whether or not to be given cpr, should he stop breathing.

saturday and sunday weren't so good for him. he didn't know who me or his wife or his daughter. he had a fall on sunday when he got out of his wheelchair to "dance to the music". i guess there was someone there to play the accordian for the residents and he was totally into it. he kept talking about flying to minneapolis and trying to hire workers who didn't want to do any work. it's sad to see him go.

the one thing that is making his deterioration easier for the entire family is that he still has his sense of humor. for one, the dancing. grandpa has never been a dancer, but i guess he can't resist a good accordian. the nurse came in to help him in the bathroom and we heard him saying, "you could have at least warmed it up for me, lady." crazy old man, you're the coolest. i miss you already.
