today me, my parents, and my grandparents went out to a fancy restaurant for a mothersday dinner. and it was all i could do to keep from screaming. im sorry, i love them and everything, but with all due respect to them i pray i dont turn out like that. they talk. all the time. and yet somehow nothing is ever said. they go on and on about maningless things while everyone else pretends to be interested so that after the current speaker is dont they can go on and on about their OWN meaningless thing. discussing the unusually pleasant weather. wondering what city the police car in front of us is from. detailing the life story of the middleaged children of someone none of the others have ever met. even discussing (not making this up) how the bark mulch in peopls yards here is a different color than the bark mulch where my grandparents live. why do people seem to think you can only enjoy the company of others if your mouth is constantly moving. perhaps douglas adams' theory is correct: "if their mouths stop moving their brains start to work". i love my family but i know very well that they are not interested is many of the things i have to say and so id much rather be silent than bore them to death. however i seen to be alone in this practice. and the jokes. oh. my. god. the stupid jokes. "hey that car in front of us is called a Z3! the Z must stand for zoom!" (everyone bursts out laughing)" humor in that sentence: absent. and yet the attempt at a joke was made so everyone must laugh. if everyone is so caught up with pretending to be nice just for the sake of being polite, how do they know if they actually like each other??? i mean in this case they do i suppose but in other situations i think its just plain wrong. i at least have enough respect for my friends to tell them "dude, thats retarded. dont do that anymore" and everyone is happy! the first person is made aware of something that makes the second person think less of him and knowing this can change it, and everyone else doesnt have to put up with it anymore. so the lesson here is: manners are the exact opposite of what they are meant to be- they do NOT show respect for those around you and in fact lead to everyone being bored and unhappy. so do your friends and family a HUGE favor and start being as untactful as you possibly can.
