I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to erect those walls... just so long as you build in a few secret passages that only you know about. Experience gives us the perspective we need to master those moments that require a leap of faith.
I am wondering if I should start referring to myself in the third person. The stuzzy has never done this. The stuzzy is intrigued. The stuzzy wonders if there are side benefits. Will the stuzzy become a chick magnet? Will it enhance his manliness? Will this enable the stuzzy to win the oh so elusive lottery?
