"I never loved you. I just used you." She stood in front of the window looking out over the city, her back towards him as she spoke the words.
He knew. Somehow he had known all along. Fooled himself into thinking otherwise. Strangely though, he felt nothing. He put on his coat and walked silently through the door.
The psychedelic patterns on the hallway carpet captured his mind for a brief moment, taking it away to another place, a better place, then he was at the elevator pressing the call button. There was a soft ding as the doors opened. A man and a woman were inside making out in the corner. They didn't look up as he got on the elevator and pressed the button for the bottom floor.
He looked down at his shoes as the elevator moved. There was some mud on the toe of his left shoe. He tried to rub it off with his right foot but only ended up smearing it, turning it into some deformed rorschach test. He thought he saw a butterfly in it, then the elevator dinged and the door slid open. The couple moved past him out of the elevator as he stood there staring at the butterfly on his shoe. The doors started closing, but he caught them before they closed and stepped into the lobby, nodding at the doorman as he walked outside into the rain.

Keep it up, Mr Man!
