In respect to the last entry... yeah, I used to be a gothy kid. Somewhere I have a scanned photo of myself being all dramatic on a toppled tombstone. Perhaps I'll post it.

...

Gah. A frustrating day doing mentoring yesterday; one of those types of days that makes me question the idea of becoming a teacher in the future, as (undoubtedly) I'd face similar situations in the future.

The problem student was a problem again, working herself into such a panicked frenzy over a relatively simple problem, that she ended up shouting ad everyone, weeping, etc. (And, no, it's not just that perhaps I misjudged the complexity of the problem. It was a problem that followed a formula, and she refused to follow steps. Ask someone to bake a cake, and the first thing they'll do is, say, preheat an oven. She would complain that there are too many flavors of frosting available, so how could one possibly ice the (still unmade) cake... and she'd never preheat the oven.)

A really bad time. Really bad. Other students walked out, other students e-mailed and said they wouldn't put up with her any more. I got through one problem-- a five-minute-problem-- in an hour and a half, cheating all of the other students out of their valuable time. I'm also sure the new students who'd never attended a session before will think twice about coming again.

Anyway. Other stuff:

Got a phone call out of the blue from an old friend of my mom's; I'd been friends with her son way-back-when. She caught me up on Dan's goings-on. "Oh, he's back from Iraq, he got remarried... his child's turning 12 this week."

*Cough* Last time I talked to Dan, I think we were 12 ourselves.

The lady also mentioned casually that she was turning 70. Jesus. So disconcerting to realize my mom's friends are getting that old; my mom was young for her circle of friends, but now she's 60. Her friends are at the age now that they could be in nursing homes soon. It feels so weird, because I feel like my life should be something by this point, something that it's not. I know it's cliche to say "gee, I feel like a teenager despite being 30/40/whatever..." But, really, I do. I'm in school, I haven't had a stable relationship in ages, I go out and dance like an idiot every few weekends... and my mom's in the AARP and her friends are entering nursing homes. Am I going to be one of those old people who just doesn't grow up?

Got listed as a Top-100 Student of the Year again at IUPUI... and also won a few hundred dollars' worth of video games from an IUPUI student group for being the high scorer on a video game trivia contest. Yes, how dorky. But hey-- for once, knowing obscure stuff about old video games proved to be a boon.

The sign of dorkdom: I got both congratulations notices simultaneously, and I'm not sure which made me more gleeful.

It sounds like that girl you mentor has serious anxiety issues and needs coundelling. or drugs. I owe my engineering degree to anti-anxiety medication.

Congrats for being smart and good at video games. And on your second/extended adolescence. TOTALLY post your goth pics.
