This one won't be whiny. Much. I promise.

I'm sitting here dreading what will occur in this city in a few hours. Super Bowl takes place later on this evening, and I'm afraid that when i wake up and leave the house this evening, there'll be drunken revellers out yelling "woo-hoo!" and driving around. Or out screaming that we were robbed. Whichever occurs, it'll be... interesting.

I kind of hope the Colts lose, really. Nothing against the team, but everything against the city. It's a shame that Indianapolis spends so much of its money on sports, when so much more is lacking here. When they finally came out of the closet and announced that the once-privately-funded stadium that was being planned for the Colts was going to be funded with tax dollars, it occurred at the same time that the city was announcing that they didn't have the money to fund school lunch programs, full-day kindergarten, air conditioning in some of the more ancient public schools, sewer repairs to stop the constant White River overflows, etc. This city's priorities are a little screwed up.

Last week, I finally broke down and signed up on a private torrent tracking site. And last week, I finally broke down and picked up a portable MP3/CD player. Can you tell that there's a cause-and-effect relationship there?

So far I'm not breaking copyright laws, at least on a moral level. I've been downloading MP3s of tons of albums I already own on various media. It's so much easier than ripping things myself, and a lot faster, too. Lots of CDs that had been scratched all to hell, tapes that were stretched or brittle, etc. Now I'm archiving stuff, creating MP3 CDs, and more, and getting to listen to stuff I haven't heard in a long time. Really wide-ranging stuff-- old pop/dance music that was a guilty pleasure in the 80s and 90s, Jello Biafra spoken word, industrial music, 1920s/30s blues recordings... it all really started because I was tired of scratching up my CDs in my car; my car CD player could play MP3 comps, so I figured, hey. I'll go online, download a few albums, and then I won't need to have a bunch of stuff in the car. Yeah, right.

God, it's great getting to listen to Drive Like Jehu again, or the Waitresses.

Actually I really liked your last post. I just didn't have time to read it before now. It made me want to shout out all sorts of predictable advice like "dump Heather!" "bag the waffle girl!" and "wow that girl you mentor sonds stupid!" (ok - that last one wasn't advice.) Unfortunately, super bowl and MP3 players aren't great conversation starters for me - but I hope Super Bowl Sunday wasn't as crazy a NHL playoffs get up here and I'm glad you're rediscovering some favorite tunes.
