So I'm at my brother's watching the game at a little get-together. Everyone else is in another room except me, my brother and my mom's boyfriend. Literally in the middle of a play, the guy says:

"I've asked your mother to marry me, and she accepted."

SAY WHAAAAAAAA?

She's known this guy for three months. He seems like a nice enough guy, really quiet, but wow. Plus he's 70 and she's only 60, and she's really beautiful and looks younger. Plus he has the same name as me, which is confusing (just kidding, that doesn't matter).

I love my mother more than anything in this world and want nothing more than for her to be happy. She's been single for eight years since my dad left, and this guy clearly adores her and can offer her support and financial security. But still, this might take some time to process.

People close to me seem to be rushing headlong into relationships. My brother bought a house with a woman he'd known for six months. My best friend is talking about marrying a guy she's known for less than that.

I can't imagine that. Don't ALL big relationships feel great after three months or six months? It's like a chemical thing that takes you over. So many people make damaging decisions based on that. I mean, I feel like I'm a romantic person, and I DO get the "when you know, you just know" thing.

But for me, I have to see what comes later, when you figure out what little things about the person bug you and then have to decide whether you can live with it. You have to fight, and learn how a person is at their ugliest and whether they can leave disagreements behind. You have to experience the mundane parts that come after the magic stops being there 24/7.

Of course, I'm 35 and single, so maybe I'm just an idiot.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

(Sorry for being lengthy and introspective two days in a row. wink Next time I'll dance around like a monkey or something)

Your dutiful underling, etc.

I'd personally like one without the flowers and stuff. one more like a V Neck with the thick 70's silk screen... ever see the MST3K episode of "Pod People"? the guy who's wearing the "I"m a Virgin" shirt. exactly like that, only I'm Special written on it instead.

I used to have the white safety helmet too. I'm kicking myself for not knowing where that got lost to.

and ya, maybe that's it. but I had some trouble in the past with asking girls out, so I normally never do it, which is probably the biggest problem. girls, even if they are crushing on you, usually don't speak up about it.
