I've had a really rough go of it at work this week.
I've been pounding the pavement to no avail for some time now. It's very discouraging, depressing, and frustrating. I've combed though the local job posting countless times, and I've tried networking, too. I've given several copies of my resume to people I know who know lots of people. I've even looked at temp agencies. Everyone who's acquainted with me knows what I've been trying to do.
If I could just make $12/hour, I would do backflips in the fucking street! That is not at all unreasonable or unreaslistic for someone who's 3 years out of college! But apparently allthe $12/hour jobs have been scooped up by laid-off computer geeks whose lives also suck because THEY used to make $50-60K.
Some "economic growth", huh? The stock market may have recovered, but companies are still very skittish about hiring, and they will take their sweet ol' fucking time to do so! Instead of hiring more staff, they're doing more with less. This means crushing workloads, and little if any raise for the doubled-up responsibilities! That's what's happening to me at work. And the whole hell of it is, they know they can get away with it because they know you'll be hard-pressed to leave, because there are no jobs out there!
So even if you are fortunate enough to have a crummy job in this economy, it still has an adverse effect on you!
What to do next? Go back to school? Career counseling? Second job? (Though I'm putting that one off as long as I possibly can!) In comtemplating my next move, it would sure be helpful to know what I WANT! I know I DON'T want to be a customer service rep for the rest of my life, but that seems to be all I'm really skilled in! Applying the Office Space rule (ask yourself what you'd do if you had a million dollars, and that will tell you what your career should be)...If money was no object for me, I would be living out of 2 suitcases all over the world. That suggests I should be in the TRAVEL INDUSTRY. Well, I'm already in the travel industry, and I want out becaue THE PAY SUCKS ASS!!!
So yeah, things could obviously be a hell of a lot better on the career/financial front. But then I don't reckon that really good news for anyone these days. But ya know what, FUCK IT! I'm off to enjoy the rest of my weekend!
