SG Homework: Favourite place I've travelled to

Catching up on some SG homework! This one is about the best trip I took. If I'm being honest about my number 1, it would ahve to be the trip to Portland! But I already wrote about that, so I decided to write another blog about my trip to New York.

About 2 years ago at the beginning of April 2012 I went to New York for the IMATS competition.

The IMATS is huge. It's the International Make up Artistry Trade Show, and there are some amazing competitions with even better prizes for make up artists around the world.

About 3 months prior, a friend of mine who had just finished make up school and I worked together on a bunch of different projects to enter into the IMATS student competition in New York. She submitted a bunch of photos, and soon got word that she had been accepted into the competition. If you're a MUA, you know that this is a huge fucking deal. If you're not, just be aware that it's a huge fucking deal.

So off we went! We went to NYC for 5 days!

Here's a massive photo dump for your viewing pleasure :) With stories.

So while in NYC, Taylor (The make up artist) and I rented a small room in the Pod hostel. It was a pretty cool little place, and we mostly kept to ourselves. We were only 20 at the time, we neither of us was able to go out and party or drink or anything. I'm not really into that anyway, but it might have been pretty rad to be able to do! I had my first twinkie on this trip! It was gross.

Here's me in Times Square! Lots of lights. Lots of people. It was very bright and lively! I don't know if you can tell how overwhelmed I was by this picture haha.

Selfie, whaaaat.

Taken at the top of the Empire State Building. The day we went, there was absolutely no line! It took about half an hour to get to the top. When we got there, half of it was blocked off because they were interviewing a few celebrities of some sort. I could see them, but had no idea who they were, so I asked the security guy. He says, "They're interviewing Boys to Men". I still had no clue who that was... So I asked who they were. The person next to me said, "You don't know who Boys to Men are?!?!" and the security man responded, "Of course she doesn't, she's wearing a John Lennon shirt...".

So that was neat.

Central Park Fountain!

Brooklyn Bridge at Night!

Lego Store!

Big ass toy store in Times Square had ALL THE THINGS.

My favourite thing about NYC was the architecture. So many incredible churches and old buildings, I was absolutely fascinated. When I get the chance to go back, I would love to mainly focus on galleries and museums instead of the typical sight seeing things!

View from our room! It was beautiful.

Central Station!

Canal Street!

If I'm being totally honest, the reason this was the best trip wasn't because of the City. I'm really not a city person, and it was rather large and noisy, and smelled of pee. The reason this trip was so awesome was because it was my first trip alone, and the competition was an incredible thing to be able to be a part of. The best part, though? We fucking won.

The theme of the competition was Under the Sea. Taylor came up with the concept of a Seahorse, and together we created the character. She is a very talented make up artist, and came up with a really incredible design. On the day of the competition, they had a platform stage set up for the artists and models to get prepared. They had 3 hours (I think?) to create the character. By the time it was done, Taylor wasn't feeling confident. She thought she had failed. We had to go to the judging area (I think there were around 8-12 other models?) and stand in front of the judges, a large crowd, loads of cameras, etc. So weird. Music was playing so I was standing there dancing about until the judges came to me. They called me "wiggle worm".

After judging was over, we had to make our way back to the platform to await the runway show. It took me a solid 10-15 minutes, because I had groups of people stopping me to take pictures with them! Coolest thing ever. When I finally found Taylor again, she was in tears! I told her how many people wanted pictures with me, and she felt a little bit better...

Then it was my turn to take to the runway...It was my very first runway experience.
I got up on stage in front of hundreds of people, dozens of cameras, press, judges... It was nerve racking, and SO exciting! I strutted my stuff the best I could, in shoes that were two sizes too big!

And then they called her name! And we both started freaking the fuck out! She had worked so hard (as had I) for it, and deserved every ounce of recognition! It was such a fun day, and so surreal!

Good times!

And there it is, the coolest trip evvvveeerrr (besides my trip to Portland!)

If you're in Vancouver tomorrow and will be downtown, so will I!
If you see me, say HELLOOO!! We can smoke some weeds together and have a jolly good time!

I hope everyone has a fantastic 4/20 ;)

I love the walk over the Brooklyn bridge. I tend to do it a lot.  Also I agree with the Architecture being splendid here.
