Blog Homework 12/12: What are your holiday traditions?

Some of my favorite Christmas traditions are ones that have been happening since I was a child.

Every year, for as long as I can remember, my dad would take us to see the Walkway of Lights in the next town over, and it has always been magical to me.

Every year, both on Halloween and Christmas, I have watched The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember, and it's a tradition I still carry out.

Growing up, we didn't get spoiled, we didn't get tons of gifts. We would get our stockings and a handful of other things, and then one "gold present." It would always be wrapped in gold paper. The gold present was always the most expensive, most special, most unique thing. One year they were millenium "2000" rings, one year they were laptops...I don't remember all of them but I DO remember the tradition.

My mom also makes gigantic cookies for all of the family members and her coworkers. She spends weeks baking them and they smell and taste amazing!

Then on New Year's Eve, we always used to have a family night. We would go to the store and get to pick out whatever food/drinks/snacks we wanted, stay up eating and drinking sparkling grape juice, playing games, and watching Dick Clark's New Years Rockin Eve, and watch the ball drop together.

That about sums up all of my favorite holiday traditions. They are terribly crazy or super wild, but I love them, and I'm glad that I can still carry some of them out.

My family was kinda nontraditional almost to a fault. My sisters and I keep trying to make some tradition things happen so we can carry them. It might actually work one day. I dig the gold wrapping thing. And who can argue with giant cookies and Dick Clark?

@bonediggy I can't remember when exactly they stopped being just something we could do again, and became actual traditions, but I'm glad to have them nonetheless.
