I do not understand the logic that is pushing a mutual friend to try to convince both myself and my ex to see other people.

Re: being pressed to see other people -- best guess is that it's supposed to "take your mind off" the past relationship. But really I've never understood that one either. At best, moving back into the dating scene too soon leads to rebound relationships, which almost always wind up hurting the other person involved. And if you're the type of person who cares when the other party gets hurt (as I suspect you probably are), that just makes things worse.
