My iPhone woes are starting now.

My iPhone shipped with firmware 1.0.2, the last perfectly hackable version. I used iFuntastic to "jailbreak" it (jailbreak means to allow read/write to the filesystem so you can install custom applications) and never had a serious problem, aside from the random (non-Apple) app freezing up which just needs a restart and everything works again.

I installed a bunch of third-party apps, customized it a little (wallpapers, changed the "AT&T" logo to "[Apple logo] iPhone", and that's about it. Nothing serious. But mainly: I did not unlock it to use it with T-Mobile or whatever, I'm perfectly content with AT&T (that is, I don't hate them like I hate Verizon).

So several weeks ago the 1.1.1 firmware came out, which wiped the filesystem clean (which is the ideal way to do it... from Apple's perspective), and made it much harder to install programs again.

Last week the iPhone dev team hackers jailbroke the new firmware, but it wasn't easy. I decided to wait, knowing that, in time, someone would make a one-click solution. Yesterday someone made a few-clicks solution (iNdependence), which I downloaded but didn't use. This morning I noticed iNdependence was updated to fix a few bugs.

This made me feel confident enough to go with the procedure.

So, after the dozen "preparation" steps, the instructions said I was ready. The only problem I foresaw was that I had two copies of SSH installed (only the new iNdependence version was enabled) as shown by Services (app that lets you turn on/off EDGE, wifi, SSH (SSHes in my case)).

Eventually I looked down during the update and the iPhone had the dreaded "[Warning icon] Please connect to iTunes." So the update failed and I had to restore the whole thing.

Now I'm running 1.1.1 without any custom stuff. Also I lost a batch of pictures that I neglected to import into iPhoto... because there may have been explicit imagery of a certain person that I did not want showing on my screen while at work.

Maybe tonight I'll take another shot at it. I hope the double SSH install was the culprit.

Otherwise 1.1.1 is pretty nice. iTunes wifi store is very well done, except I rarely buy music online, so... that one's of a bit limited use to me. Spacebar double-tap for period is awesome.

I will miss... probably just my wallpaper, replaced AT&T logo, and icon display order. But I do want to make some custom icons... sigh.

At least it's not an iBrick.
