I've discovered that it'll cost me a lot more to get a scuba instructor certification than I thought it would. Basically, it'll end up costing me around $2400.00. That's a lot of money. I'm not sure I really want to work as an instructor for a long time either and I don't know how easily I can get a job as an instructor. I was sort of thinking that I could work as an instructor down in monterey once I move down there and start going to school, but I'm not sure it's worth this rather sizeable investment up front.

Pro: Breathing underwater is fun. I could theoretically get work at a resort in the tropics somewhere. I don't know if I'd want to do that for a long time but it could be fun for a year or so. Extra diving experience could be useful in getting marine science work.

Con: $2400.00 is a lot of dough and could perhaps be better spent on other types of education.

Please tell me what is the right thing to do... Then I can ignore it and fuck up.

Yup, that's my broken spine. Compression fracture in '98. Luckily no nerve damage, but it still bothers me from time to time.

It hurt a lot more because I didn't have insurance at the time. It happened snowboarding. I went a little too big on a tabletop jump. Landed about ten feet past the transition, on my back. OUCH!! Your's does sound more painful though. I couldn't afford any surgery or therapy, so I just laid on my back for three months and let it heal as best it could.

A friend of mine recently told me he got his dive certification some where in Central America and said it was much cheaper than he could have gotten it here in the states. If you're ever headed done that way, it might be something to look into.
