I went out to the Elbo Room last night to meet up with a friend who was in town for one day from LA to see her brother-in-law's band. If you have never heard of them I highly recommend them. They are Estradasphere and I can only describe seeing them live as watching a movie score take shape and sound before your eyes and ears. They are incredibly talented musicians and they float between ethereal, minimal, orchestral then jump straight into heavy rock moving next into circus style then... well you get the idea. They are all over the place, but somehow it works; it works incredibly well. The big bonus of the night came from not just seeing my friend and a great band, but being amazed by the opening band as well: Stolen Babies. Their music is described as "quirky-goth, prog-pop, metal, cabaret, punk, art rock, thrash, industrial." The music was good, their performance good (and weird; exhibit A: Ray Ray - you have to see them to understand, sorry), and a petitie tutu clad, doll makeup faced, woman who plays accordian, can sing like an angel, and scream like a devil. I think I'm in love! Anyway... If you get a chance to see either of these bands I highly recommend it!
