Teaching: perforrmance semiotics to 2nd year uni students. It's the practice of being aware of what sign systems are in play in a performance and what kinds of interpretations you generate on the basis of these. This means...

Seeing: lots of theatre, lately. Like 5 productions in 3 weeks:
Company B's current production of A Midsummer Night's Dream @ Belvoir St Theatre;
Frumpus's Crazed 2 @ Performance Space;
Theatre Physical's Landed @ Sidetrack Theatre;
Ensemble Theatre's production of Kimbery Akimbo @ the Ensemble; and
Jenny Kemp's Still Angela @ Performance Space.

This can be great - afterall, I'm working at a PhD in Performance Studies and this is what I love and want to make a career in. However, this also means...

Thinking: about how crap some theatre is and how great some is. But...

Avoiding: using these terms in front of my students because I am trying really hard to get them to write analytically and not in awful movie-trailer reviewer style crap such as "from the makers of BLAH BLAH comes the story of BLAH BLAH in which two people solve the mystery of BLAH BLAH."

In other news...

Planning: a trip to Canberra this weekend for Freaky's birthday. She loves tulips (see Chapter 1 of Jeanette Winterson's The Power Book for why wink ) and there's a big flower and jazz festival starting this Saturday. Seems very fitting as she gave me a huge bunch of cherry blossoms for my birthday - it's our flower birthday year, I guess.

Asking: has anyone seen any really good cherry blossom tattoos? I've been looking around but to no avail so far and it is my belated gift to myself to get a new tattoo on my left arm but I'm yet to find a great picture / drawing to work from. All suggestions gratefully accepted.

i so agree with you! it is a challenge to get them thinking on their own without grafting your interps on them ... and to avoid the Triumph of the Human Spirit reviews when yabos prink around on stage full of affect and mincing ridiculousness. much crap theater indeed. and then some? so good.

ohhhhh, cherry blossoms ~ loverly. i wish i did have some great pix, but alas, i don't. ummmm ~ have you found any traditional fans or trad screens of japanese prints? maybe going into a store with such things will spark ideas. also, this might sound odd, but might there be pictures of icing flowers like that? often work on cakes is so precise and detailed, but not necessarily botanical. hmmmm. good luck! kiss
