The Bubble

Tonight I went out with my friend Jeremy Cross who explained a theory he has about people. His theory is that we all live inside a comfort zone that we have built up, or a "Bubble". When this "bubble" is punctured or pressure has been applied to it we lose the comfort and become edgy and somehow off. I admit that I certainly do have a comfort zone that when pushed drives me nuts. However, the cool thing about it, is when your "bubble" expand without you asking it to, this happens a lot with music, a band that I may not be familiar with, or that I just plain don't like does something that connects or is kick ass, while falling out of the genres that you already like.

Whenever I go clothing shopping I freak out. It's predictable to the minute, and the theory above applies. For those of you who don't knowI only wear black, and have only wore black since I was about 12 years old. Not so much of a gothic thing, just a way to personalize my tastes and sensibilities.

Here's is what happens.
-head out to the mall
-check out Hot Topic, and get disappointed that there stuff isn't "cool" enough
-figure what the heck, I will go to Mervyns (or Macys or searsmakes no difference) they all carry black clothes, so I am sure to find something that will do.
-start out in the guys section and grab a pair of jeans, or maybe a bag of blank black Jockey shirts, and some socks
-then I start to browse and end up in the mens section, the area that has suits and button up shirts
-after about 3 or 4 minutes (this happens every time) I start to get a mini anxiety attack and have to not only get out of the section , but out of the store because somehow everything around me has turned "normal" from the dirty looks of the monkey suited cashier to the reality that it all looks like normal people clothes.and dammit I am NOT NORMAL!
- I race to the cashier in another section and pay for the generic black jeans, t-shirts and socks then complain that nothing is cool anymore

So my question to you iswhere do you get your cool clothes? I cant afford a custom tailored rock star out fit, or fancy Melrose trend of the minute stuff (although I usually like some of it). I am a walking billboard for Hot Topic, but where do you shop for cool guys clothing? My "Bubble" is open to suggestions

Bean gets most of his black "abnormal" clothing at American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, and Lip Service.

For him, it's all in how you put the clothes together. biggrin Urban Outfitters has a surprising amount of men's military-styled shirts in black that lend themselves quite well to goth-genre styles.

Then of course there are always any DIY upgrades like razorblade slashes or safety pins, although I'm more likely to do that to my clothes than Bean is to his.

Hell, even GAP 1969 black jeans look subversive when paired with boots from GoodGoth and a Lip Service buttondown.

Then there's always JetRag. Bean found an amazing tux jacket there for $10. It looks great with jeans and tshirts. biggrin

I've entirely grown out of Hot Topic. Either that or Hot Topic has grown out of me, i'm not sure, because I still wear the clothes I bought at Hot Topic many years ago... but they're not recognizable as "Hot Topic" anymore.

Bean and I joke that our style is somewhere between "grad school goth" and "corporate goth." Normal enough that we don't attract stares, but abnormal enough that we occasionally attract attention. Does that make sense?
