How much damage can a single asshole cause?
Not enough, apparently. This happened this morning, a few blocks from where I live.

Turns out some bus driver insisted in going over a railroad crossing while the gates were down, the sirens were ringing and the red lights were on. He only saw the train that had just arrived at the station, and was ran over by the train coming from the other side. He and 10 others were killed, while 212 were injured.
The bus was smashed between the station and the train, causing a second crash between both trains.

I know things are totally fucked up in my city and that no place is safe, specially trains. The thing is, it's not that dangerous unless someone jumps in front of a moving train.

Do you see the tail of the bus, or what remains of it? There used to be a safety rail there, to make people look both sides before crossing the railroad.
I always steped behind it while waiting for the trains to pass. Dan enjoyed climbing the rail as the trains dangerously passed only a few steps away.

So Spica, why aren't there underground passes in Buenos Aires, like everywhere else?
Because -as far as I can understand- people don't want them built, as they decrease property value. 17 out of 25 plans for underground passes are cancelled because of this.
Of course, this can only happen in a city where people have the habit of lifting gates because they can't afford to wait until it's safe to cross. People will usually say gates are broken when they stay down for long periods of time and passers-by even offer to lift them.
Sure, sometimes they ARE broken, but most of the time people aren't just patient enough. Then you have incidents like this one.

Last night, as we were going home from the train station, the sirens started ringing just before I tried to cross the railroad and it took me a little longer than Dan to react. Before I could even stop and go back behind the safety rail Dan pulled my hand as he told me "No, no, no".
At least I can rest assured that I did a good job with the little one.
