Once in a rare while something will happen that makes me think that there are higher powers working from behind the scenes. I recently came very close to death. The circumstances are so strange that I am almost convinced someone was teaching me a lesson.

I was driving my friend out of vegas at 2am because he had lost all his money and was turning sour and trashing our room. i was driving 110 m.p.h. in the dark in the middle of the desert. suddenly my car drove over what must have been a rock or a crow bar. it throttled the whole car like driving over a curb at a high velocity. the car started losing traction and banking side to side. my steering wheel wasn't responding well and i slowly pumped the brakes.

Thankfully i slowed it down before crashing and brought it to the side of the road. My object made a golfball sized hole in my tire and indented my rim almost 2 inches deep. my car clanked on it's broken rim over and over as i drove it off the exit . as soon as i was on the side street, a large sign suspended over the road read: "You are now entering the gates of death valley."

A little history: I have a bad habit of driving and weaving very fast. The sign above the road, to me, felt like a warning: keep driving the way you do and you're asking for death." Now the story gets stranger. After getting the spare tire on and getting back on the road, I drove for about a minute when suddenly a white bmw came shooting past me going about 120-130mph. it swerved to avoid a car in front of us that was trying to get out of its way. it came so close to losing control that one of its back tires slid off the pavement and into the sand. a minute later i see a car upside down in the divider with four passengers spread out on the ground and no other cars stopped to help. I ran over to them and to my shock it was the very same bmw. the whole top had been crushed.

all of them, amazingly, were unhurt. they were young, probably late teens. and they were so drunk that they were still not comprehending what had happened. seeing that they were alright, i got back in my car and felt very disturbed. in the space of 20 minutes, i had witnessed and been party to 2 near death situatioins involving reckless driving. i vowed never to drive that way again.

had to drive under 55mph all the way back home (250 miles). first day of law school was that evening. it took 10 hours because we had to stop every 30minutes to put water on the tire because it got so hot the rubber was in danger of melting. the whole way home, cars, trucks, even cement trucks, were riding my ass, passing me by, honking and flipping me off for what they preceived to be my snail's pace driving. the irony was long and enduring, as i received my penance for every driver that i had ever cut off, tailgated, or just plain scared with my speeding.

Sitting in morning rush out traffic on the 15 freeway, it occured to me that i would never let myself forget this lesson. I got 2 hours of sleep before my first day in lawschool. Viva Las Vegas.
gangstaswan:
Woah, that's pretty scary hon. Good luck with your new found driving habits.
