Buffy's back! When Joss Whedon said he was putting out Season 8 of the popular show via Dark Horse Comics, I was excited. I'm a huge fan and the while the show didn't change my life or anything, I enjoyed watching it. I did try the comic books that Dark Horse used to put out but they were just little side-stories that didn't amount to much or change anything; the stories were wedged into continuity without altering it.
As the creator of the series, Joss promised new stories that would be cannon to the mythology. Not only that, but he promised big writing talent from the pool of writers he had on the show and popular comic book writers like Brian K Vaughan and Brad Meltzer (who is also a best-selling author).
Issue #1 is out (and sold out) and I loved the book. It introduces us to the new status quo since the Scoobies turned Sunnydale into a crater at the end of season 7. BEWARE: SPOILERS AHEAD. When Willow turned all the potentials in the world into Slayers, at least 1,800 Slayers were activated. Buffy is leading a squad of 5 Slayers, some of whom are rookies. Xander is running a SHIELD-like support team that supplies Buffy's team with real-time intelligence. Dawn has BIG problems (literally). She's a giant because of a fling with a Thricewise - I don't know what the hell a Thricewise isbut I'm looking forward to Buffy kicking the shit out of it.
Not a lot of action in the first issue - Joss is taking time reintroducing the characters and getting us adjusted to the status quo. No appearance from Willow or Giles but there's no way that will last long. I'm glad this is back as a comic book because the writers don't have to worry about budget for any of the crazy shit they come up with. This issue sold through the initial printing and there will be a second printing for those who are just learning about it. There are probably tons of fans that aren't aware of the comic book.
