i've stayed friends with ex's, it really depends on the situation and you need to take it slow. My exboyfriend and i broke up on mutual terms and decided to stay friends so we wouldn't have to divide our friends or make things awkward. at first it didn't work too well, but once we'd both dated around some and settled into life without each other, we got to talking and have actually become decent friends again. So it can happen, it's just difficult.
