I thought I'd share this with everyone.... Back in September Utah tried this...and was mostly unsuccessful. Though our local power company, Rocky Mountain Power estimates if 750,000 electricity users turned off five light bulbs for an hour, it would save enough energy to completely power 1,300 homes for a week. Sydney, Australia did it and had a 10% energy reduction...2.2 million people joined in there. Watch the video and lets join in this year! Turn off your lights March 29, 2008 at 8pm and join the movement against global warming.

No, I used a studio strobe plugged in to a wall socket through a long extension cord.

I used a handheld meter to check the ambient light. I think it was f11.5. I used the handheld meter to set the strobe so it was popping at f22.5 or close to that and set the camera to f22.5. You won't be able to get that out of a 580 speedlight. I'm afraid.

The reason I went 2 stops over with the strobes is because the client wanted a dark blue sky. They asked if I could make it dark blue in photoshop and I told them I would make it a dark blue right now. smile

One thing you can do with the 580 is shoot on a cloudy day, at sunrise and sunset and in the shade. Also, you can use the sun as a hair/rim light and set your strobe to one stop under the sunlight. For example; if the sunlight is hitting your subject at f11 on the back of their head, then light the front of their head with f8 and set your camera to f8.
