i read this letter in Time today:

"Detainee 063 was never physically harmed. He put his health in peril with his refusal to eat and take fluids. His treatment should be put in the proper context. Prisoners at Guantnamo are fed meals that accord with their religious beliefs, they are given Korans and prayer rugs, and their health is monitored. Torture camp? Sounds more like a resort to me! -Ron Spencer, Raleigh NC"

YOU MOTHERFUCKER. god people make me so sick. i'd like to make ol' Ron crawl around on the floor and act like a dog and see what kind of fabulous resort experience that reminds him of.

I thought it might be that marathon. a friend of mine is training for it right now and wanted me to go with her. We're stationed in Monterey so its not really all that far away. I'm in SF now, is that where you live?

I also don't like the "war on terror" in the sense that it's a rediculous concept--"terror" is not something that can ever be destroyed. its an abstract concept like freedom and love. I wish they had had the cajones to just come out and call it a "war on militant islam". At least they could be clear on who the enemy is.

As far as gitmo goes I have mixed feelings. I know a number of actual interogators and I know why they're not supposed to do certain things but I also know they have an extremely extremely difficult job. The fact is, torture and humiliation sometimes works. If they didn't get results they wouldn't use it. At the same time its a well-known saying in those circles that if you have to resort to those means then the suspect has already won. Also if the enemy thinks he is going to be treated humainly when captured then he's more likely to just give up rather than fight. but if the enemy thinks he's going to be tortured he'll fight a lot harder. Theorhetically this BS at gitmo and that other big case last year in Iraq has/will cost American lives.
