edited to add that i just found out that wayne booth, one of my favourite literary theorists ever, died today (try "the rhetoric of fiction" if you're interested). bummer. all the theorists i really respect are kicking the bucket; there are really very few "modern" critics i find as clear and as exciting as some of the older dudes. i wish i could have met some of 'em. i guess that's why i study work from several decades ago. theory just seems to get more & more convoluted as it develops as there is perhaps not so much new groundbreaking stuff to say so the old stuff has to be rehashed into tortuous postmodernism...
