I've been dreadfully sick for the last three or four days: feverish and delerious and whatnot, with a throat so sore I couldn't sleep due to the pain of swallowing waking me up. It wasn't particularly fun, but is mostly gone now except for a lingering stab at the back of my throat. At least I can enjoy a cigarette now (or, could, if not...

you should apply to sgny. there are lots of people in there who could probably point you in the right direction with apartment stuff.

i'm at work. nursing a sunburn and lamenting the end of the (short) long weekend.

I'm curious as to what sort of "unique" items you sell on the interweb. I've been known to sell one or two "unique" paintings via the interweb before, but I haven't had luck with it really. surreal

I'm feeling shite today. I am grumpy and not pleasent to be around and am not enjoying any of the things that normally pass my time. It's miserable hot and buggy. My housemate's girlfriend, Liz, is over for the night. She's been gloriously absent for a while. One of those people who just sits in the room and talks over everyone with nonsense that's got...

ok so here's my gripe for today - i'm up on tech as far as software goes but never as far as hardware goes, entirely due to lack of cash, so i'm always looking for the linux distro. which is easiest on crappy computers. in my experience this is gentoo and the related projects because portage allows you to easily compile anything to your specific...

i caught up on sleep a little, or at least i feel better, which is sort of all that matters in terms of sleep. i got some decent work done last night and this morning. i'm putting my thesis on hold to work on the seperatism/secessionist talk. the IAS asked me to turn it into a paper for their journal and now it's turned from...

well in utter disreguard to yesterday's update - today i will talk about minutea!
i've just noticed how 'all the world is green' by tom waits is a far more amazing song than i'd given it credit. it's now right up there with 'dirt in the ground' as my current favorite.
i've also noticed how great an mp3 player amaroK is. this is something lacking...

My body is all a bit out of whack this week. I have a cold, maybe the bronchitus that's been going around, and I haven't caught up on sleep since last weekend so I'm really fucking exhausted. Times when I don't sleep for more than 20 hours or so really fuck me up for the week following because I never really catch up in one...

how big will your thesis be?

i did an MA, my first one, it was 3 chapters. and that was two too many. my advisor liked them big - almost like mini-dissertations biggrin ... but given constraints of tiime and my own ability, it came out sort of hackneyed (i mean, i wrote it in a *year* - you can't do something of that size in a year and have it be any good).

my more recent MA was article length, approx. 25 pages. i liked it much, much more.

i think your attitude to your thesis sounds about right on.... i mean, no one's work is EVER perfect, and especially when you have a really strict time limit (re: graduating), you sort of have to balance utility with quality. so, just doing a good job, but not getting hung up on perfection is the best way to get the most out of the process i think.

breaking it into chapters - a series of essays that lead up to a bigger point - is *really* smart. it makes it manageable. trying to make it one cohesive narrative .. that's *rough.*

since actually having an adviser my thesis has become a mite more serious and intimidating, feeling like work, and i'm less wont to do it in those circumstances. so now i'm stressed about it and it spoils most things i try and do. i can't read for fun because i'm in the habit of looking for connections that can be cited or used as illustration...

good luck on your thesis. when i was working on mine, working on 2nd drafts/being almost done was actually the hardest point for me to work. all the revisions feel so redundant (though necessary). it's just the most "slogging" part of it ya know?

i do the same thing with movies - i'm always reading them for subtext. i'm not particularly great at it (just not posty enough? wink). but it is fun - and even the worst movies can be interesting. i've fallen to the point that i might evaluate 'good' movies (re: quality acting or directing) as 'bad' b/c of the themes. whatever

the grad school thing.. it's nuts. when you said your "school' wasn't good enough to get you in - i wasn't sure if you meant the quality of institution or your performance there. if it's the former, don't worry too much. i mean, that matters SOME. but people can get in places from all over; grad programs want smart, interesting people - not pedigree. i went to (what is considered) a pretty ratty place for my BA, and i got into a top tier grad program. it's a bit of luck, hard work, talent, and connections ... ya know? so don't despair! it all works out smile

So I'm in the process of begging a guy from the phi. department at Clemson to be my thesis advisor until I graduate. This is rather stressful, because though I know he's a really cool guy, really approachable and passionate about what my thesis is about, he's still in academia, which my school is far from. I'm walking a thin line between academic-ethics and general...

Not to wax too metaphorical, but its been raining nearly non-stop since my birthday. Some days its been a lovely rain, and things are certainly getting greener. I cant help, though, but wonder how much the grey and gloom are effecting my mood. Im not even in particularly that foul a mood. Ive been doing good work today, working through some things that I need...
