Today is June 19th. It is "Juneteenth," a sort of folksy black holiday that commemorates the day the Emancipation Proclamation was read in Texas, in 1865, freeing a quarter-million slaves - nearly 3 years after Lincoln did. Those Texans, always on the ball. I'm sure any delay was purely miscommunication.

Anyway, it's kind of a cool holiday in certain segments of the black community; part debutante's ball, part parade, part bbq cookoff, part after-church gathering, part black cowboy exhibit. Surely, something's going on in your 'hood...you should check it out.
llona:
When I lived in Charlotte, there was always a fun Juneteenth festival, it had more of an African flair. Lots of drumming, good food, kente cloth.

I haven't seen much mention of a Juneteenth festival here in Atlanta, i'm sure there is one. It's funny though, lately i've been dipping my toes into Yoruba, which is related, sort of.
in a tangential sort of way.

anyway, hope the festival is fun and reverential in your neck of the woods.......
xoxo
