It seems utterly bizarre that there are "rules" to war, at least as far as conduct is concerned, but there are. We are all humans. Even the "enemy."
The metatext of the Iraqi Prison Photos is that the soldiers in the jail saw the Iraqis as "the other." Whether the actions of those twentysomething foot soldiers were passed down through the military chain of command or derived of their own ignorance/arrogance, they viewed the captives as "aliens," so to speak, and that should give some insight into the propaganda they're being fed. That the Iraqis were somehow responsible for 9/11? They probably believe it. They have blood on their hands, they're being told, and so they are less than human. They are dogs. They should be humiliated. You can rape them. You can demonize them.

what makes me even more insane is all the excuses i've heard people try to give to justify what's going on. it's sickening.
