I had a great day today, i went to the veen outside out town (think marsh or swamp except pretty and not smelly).
It's so pretty there and the air is so clean, you really don't notice how dirty city air is untill you go to a place like that and you come back just to notice that you're trying to avoid inhaling too deeply.
one of the main reasons i went there was to take pictures of the various animals.
the place was literally crawling with green and brown frogs which is good since most amphibians and reptiles aren't doing too great in the Netherlands.
at first i only found one frog which is spotted because it quickly hopped away from it's sunny spot into the water.
after a while i began to see frogs everywhere and it didn't take me that long to get back in the habit of sneaking up to them to take a picture.
i spend two or three hours taking pictures of frogs and generally just enjoying the veen walking around untill i finally found what i really came to see.
a beautifull dutch viper or adder all coiled up in the cool morning air trying to warm itself up.
now i've learned from experience that these vipers are very shy creatures so i creep closer as stealthy as a very stealthy thing preparing to photograph it only to have the camera bleep loudly and proclaim that it is full.
I give a annoyed sigh and start to exchange the cartridge while the snake gets fed up with my antics and legs it into the reet.
The veen is really a beautifull place, it's not open water but it's not quite solid land either.
most of the path is just very soggy mix of earth and plant remains while on either side of the path you have water as far as the eye can see but it's all grown shut with little islands of plant and earth, you can trust the ground anywhere, whatever you step in could be marsh or even water covered by a layer of floating moss islands.
when i went home i found several vipers and frogs for photograping, i also followed a little lizard for a while but it moved too fast for me to take a picture, i hope next time i'll find some small lungfish and ringsnakes.
