To continue with the 'what is Dave watching this week' theme, I have visited the cinema on 3 occasions this week. Oh, how I love my UGC unlimited card.

First up was

I hadn't read the graphic novel that this was based on because ummm, I haven't really read ANY graphic novels. I managed to read Fray recently by Joss Whedon and that was OK but that's besides the point. I found the movie to be highly enjoyable and I am not tainted by knowing what the ending in the novel was and how the Wachowski's have toned down the message etc etc. What was presented before me was better than I had expected from the trailer and I'd recommend people go along and check this out. Fine performances all round - especially Natalie Portman - and a central theme that the people will decide if their governments stand or fall - which is a timeless one I guess.

Next up was

What can I say really apart from it was absolutely brilliant. Ray Winstone was his usual brilliant self and Guy Pearce excelled himself again. The real stars of the movie though were all those damn flies. Now, I HATE flies. They got me itching and swatting at my head all the way through the film. How's THAT for realism? The music was superb and I plan on borrowing the soundtrack CD from my dad who purchased it last week. Go see this if you love down 'n' dirty westerns and exploding heads.

Last but not least I have just returned from viewing

Now, I went along expecting to be sickened and to vomit in the lap of my good lady by my side. I had prepared her for this and she said it was fine as long as she could vomit, in turn, over my hair.

What a load of overhyped nonsense. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was watchable but I was expecting something extreme. And it just didn't happen. If Eli Roth thinks THAT is the goriest film in years then he is way wrong. I've seen more gore looking at a baby's face after it has been let loose with a spoon on a plate of spaghetti.

Detestable characters also and such terrible cliches in use that all European women are easy and will go to bed with anyone - at any time - with an american accent. And don't get me started on how every character in the darn film had sex as their entire motivation in life. YAWN.

But hell, it was a horror flick and I'll go see any old horror shit.

Apart from that, not much going on in Dave land. Rehearsing for the next Southpaw gig - April 8th in the Vale in Glasgow. Trying to get 4 or 5 new songs together but time is against us.

Oh well.

plagiarism a good filmmaker does not make!

now, if Miike's next film involves a cameo from Eli Roth, in a torture scene, getting his balls fed to himself before being made to watch his own films, i'll be a happy man.

Planning to go see V for Vendetta this weekend if I can. Although I'm a big fan of the comic - and people who have similar tastes to me have told me I probably won't like it. But we shall see.

There's a pirate of Hostel lying around the house just now, so I may watch it later. Funny feeling I'll hate it though - I couldn't stand Cabin Fever. Roth's a hack.
