It's funny, people are scared of what they don't know anything about. I find, that once you tell people about snakes, and they can see them behind glass, then most will eventually want to try and touch or hold one.

Someone I used to know had a ridiculously huge Snake it was in this aquarium that took up half the room or something I always thought that was cool, he had an Iguana called Iggy Pop too which I thought was quite funny. As for the whole BBQ thing every man and his dog has been having them over here with the hot weather it's like BBQ season or something.
