What if the world is actually a living being, with multiple personalities and we are all the earths altranate identities being killed off by the earth itself eventually to face off with one final demon- for lack of a better word- and the paranormal activities that people witness are past personalities coming back into the earths brain-again for lack of a better word- and one day the earth to have a fresh start and eventually start over in the same way.
I say this strange theory because to look at something larger then us we should first look at something smaller then us, cells. Cells have parts the word has layers (cell parts) (the earths layers) They are essentially the same thing just with different names. This along with the fact that this is an ever changing planet just as humans have ever changing bodies proves that the world is a living being and that the above paragraph is plausible. THE END
That is my theory of our greater purpose. Still working on the kinks and logistics but there it is I may be insane but I might be a genius. Who knows

oktoberskyline has the right idea ...
most 'sightings' are around areas that have a permanent structure or are wet/damp ie castles, houses etc . I would put forward that when people die (especially in battle etc) the event is highly emotionally charged, this charge produces a 'memory' in the rock/stone/enviroment that when the conditions are the same at a later time ,the memory is replayed. This explains why different people see the same thing and also why the 'ghost' is clothed.
Poltergiest activity ,i would suggest, is similar but different in that it is bad emotional memories in the surroundings that affect the subconcious of the living and their energy affects the objects....(not neccesarily producing ghosts)...
....just an opinion but i have thought about this for a long time, as a regular castle visitor, as a medieval re-enactor (staying after the public leave) ...we have thousands of ghosts here in the uk, almost on every street...lol
