Valentines Day

....was the greatest ever.

First of all let me say that I think Valentines Day is a bunch of horse shit. I will however spare you the commercial rant of Valentines Day because I'm sure you have heard it all before.

So back in November tickets were ordered for myself, my brother and a friend to see Sigur Ros perform at the Ryman on Valentines Day. Unlike most people I was not worried about having to spend that day with someone else. I've learned in 27 years that most relationships are crap.

We arrived at the Ryman about half an hour before the show was scheduled to start. The merchandise was a little pricey for the most part, but there are some things that you just have to have. Hatch Show prints did a pretty awesome poster for the show. The merch booth was being handled pretty poorly. One guy working a long booth with a couple hundred people waiting to make purchases. This was before the show, I would hate to think about how bad it was after the show.

Our seats were seven rows back. I've always been told that there isn't a bad seat in the Ryman. That may be true, but I'd still rather be sitting where we sat than anywhere else. It was well worth getting up early to buy the tickets online. Amina took the stage at 8:00pm. They are a instrumental all female quartet from Iceland. In the past they have done some backing work on a few Sigur Ros albums. I had only ever heard two or three of their songs before. It was from an appearance on some Icelandic tv show that I had downloaded a few days ago. The music was so beautiful. It's the kind of music I would imagine playing at the gates of heaven, if I believed in such a place. A few songs in one of the girls starting playing a Saw. It was pretty fucking awesome.

At 9:00pm Sigur Ros came on. The show started with this large white curtain up in front of the band. The lighting was constantly changing so that at one point you could see the band behind the curtain and at other times you could only see their enlarged shadows. The two hour set they played seemed to fly by too quickly. The sound and the show was just amazing. Most of the audience was just in awe of what was taking place before them. Truly just a powerful experience. It's hard to imagine any other peformance leaving me with the feeling this one did.

*Update

I saw Sigur Ros again on Friday (Feb. 17th) in Louisville at the Louisville Palace. The Louisville Palace is an amazing place to see a show. It's sort of hard to describe, but you feel like your sitting in one of those old outdoor theaters over in Europe, but you are indoors. The ceiling is painted and lite up like a night sky. It's just amazing. We had seats 5 rows back. The set was the same except for the fact that they added "Untitles #1" to the encore.
