Tonight I went to this sweet little wine bar in the yuppie-fied part of PDX.
I am not a wine drinker at all, and begged for a dusty Moretti they had shoved in the back for us uncouth folk....
my compatriots and I got in that big is sex work opression or liberation battle of the minds, and it occured to me just how ridiculous it is, I mean the assumptions we (non-sex workers) make about sex workers is so obscene, this one girl commented" I like to make sure to go up to the rack when there's just a bunch of guys up there because i want to make the girl feel safe" It seems like so often sex workers are kept out of the dialogue that concerns them so intimatly. While academia battles it out in blacks and whites- they are left picking up the pay check and feeling a wide spectrum of beliefs about their work much like the rest of us and our love hate relationships with our specifc labor. I mean do we make these kinds of judgments/assumptions about sales workers? do we ask ourselves the heirarchal status of the mailman?

America and sex have a stilted relationship....goddamn puritans...

My BF and I have fairly frequent discussions about sex worker oppression, too. He's of the opinion that all women involved in sex-work are extremely exploited (and yet he manages to enjoy porn just the same... whatever!), while I prefer to believe that at least SOME sex workers enjoy what they do and get involved in the industry by choice. I like your point about sex workers being excluded from dialogue that concerns them. I came across some columns written by a prostitute defending prostitution a while ago; I can't remember alot of details, but it was very interesting reading.

Oh, speaking of America and sex; do you read Dan Savage's column? It's one of my favessmile
