Shove It In Your Ears, Part 1

I'm pretty big into music. My dad has always had an extensive record collection and is also quite musically obssesed (I'm willing to bet that is where I get it from), and my earliest memory of music listening would be dancing in the kitchen to Paul Simon's Graceland and UB40's Rat in the Kitchen records. I thought I'd share my love of music and my devotion to constantly seeking out new bands/ revisiting old ones with the SG community as well! I know there is a group called What Are You Listening To Right Now? but I thought I'd do a weekly blog post and not have my findings get lost in a sea of comments. Also, PLEASE feel free to share your discoveries and such with me as well!

Without further ado, here is a small dumping of music I've been listening to lately:

FUCK! *(It's pronounced SHIT!)* - Bandcamp link

My boyfriend actually just dropped this into my lap today and told me I'd love it....and I'm basically beyond in love with it. If you're familiar with the Murderburgers from the UK, this is their side project. Hardcore, snotty punk stuff that clocks in at under 7 minutes.

Shitty Weekend - Bandcamp Link

That crappy recording quality sounds that a lot of bands are trying to achieve these days is sooo fucking overdone in my opinion, but these PDX dudes do it well. The shitty quality plus the saxophone instantly reminds me of X-Ray Spex and I'm 100% into it

NOFX - Pump Up The Valuum - Youtube link

I never was really that big on NOFX, even in those formative punk years, but this album is fucking great. I revisited this album on my walk home from work last night and totally air drummed like a maniac while Dinosaurs Must Die and Bottles to the Ground played.

Yacht Club - Bandcamp link

I've been feeling those summer vibes with Yacht Club lately, namely with the Tropicana single. Shit's fucking goooooood and Ben just slays everything. One time last summer we randomly went to a small backyard party and he was there and barbecued me some asparagus. That was pretty cool. Though, I couldn't take my eyes off the massive gold signet ring he was wearing. Yacht Club also features Matty Dee who is a pretty dope dude (also in No Warning with Ben) with the most amazing fashion sense ever.

U.S. Girls - Bandcamp link

These ladies also make summer feel extra summery with their magical music. They give me warm fuzzies in my belly with their weird soul vibes.

Ramones - End of the Century - Youtube link

I just finished reading Marky Ramone's autobiography and have been on a pretty crazy Ramones kick, especially with this record. The legendary maniac, Phil Spector, pumped out an A+ record with this gem (I mean, would you expect anything less?).

The Penske File - Bandcamp link

These dudes are just straight up rad. When I lived in Hamilton I'd make sure I'd see them play every single time. Last week I was fortunate enough to help out on a Bigwig/Brutal Youth/Penske File tour and I was able to see them almost every day. Their energy is fucking bonkers and you can tell how much they love doing what they do every time they play a show.

dashwood_one:
Good recommendations! My brother and I have somewhere between 15-20 thousand vinyl records [at least]. I started collecting records when Punk started off in 1976, and my brother, who is seven years younger than me, started in 1979, collecting records on the '2-Tone' label. Our collection could be described as 'eclectic', and contains pretty much every kind of music. Neither of us can understand people who will only ever listen to one kind of music: listen to one style, and it will lead you to another. Even finding the source record for a sample used on a rap record, can set you off on another wonderful journey. I couldn't live without music. You are very, very cool. xxxxx
