SPOILERS! (Click to view)

my niece, vivianna, 8 weeks old

so - i am shooting a wedding on october 6th, and another on october 13th.
this make me excite time! i am trying to build a portfolio so i can make more moneys! (and in turn do this for a living)
except i'm nervous because i haven't done a wedding since i've known all my lighting stuff.
i did two, a ways back, but both were shot with direct flash = boring/talentless.
i have been doing a lot of research on off-camera/creative lighting -
i've been reading strobist since he started his blog, and through him have discovered flashflavor.com, which has given me tons of ideas. i feel like i need to practice first, to see if i can pull all these ideas off before the big days.
i'm so excited still, because both weddings are for close friends and i don't think i'll feel as pressured.
either that or i'll feel more pressured to impress them with my fotografing skillz

in the meantime, i must shop for a new lens or two. suggestions?
i currently have a 18-70mm f3.5-4.5, 28-200mm f3.5-5.6, and a 50mm 1.8.
i'm thinking i want a 28mm (or 24mm) 1.8, a better standard zoom (even an off-brand like a sigma, tamron or tokina), and/or a super wide fixed or zoom like a 15mm fisheye or the 12-24 tokina. some of you probably lost me a ways back, but for those who know what i just said, what would you say are the better two choices for shooting weddings?

isn't him cute?

also, i'm open for SG shoots if anyone's interested. i have already done the paperwork for the site, so i might as well shoot some, right? i already have one set live, and there are 2 in the hopefuls section that probably won't go live, but meh. i have lots of free time now that summer's over and camping season is done, so hit me up if you are interested in shooting with me.

nate finally fixed the part on his 4wheeler that's been busted for almost two years. so we're about to go over to where it's been stored and he's going to put it back together so we can go riding. yayeh! he likes it rough, so i think i'm going to be a hurting unit tomorrow at work...

so the images in this post have been totally unrelated to what i've been talking about, but they're cute and i haven't shown pics in a while.

groove:
Cool! The wedding work sounds pretty nice, and I'm sure you will do a kick ass job....

As for the lenses, personally, I'd go for a 24mm 1.4 for now. Very practical shooter... and I think you'd get more use from it in general that a super wide (which seem so gimicky unless you pull it off just perfectly). I also wouldn't waste the dough on an off brand zoom.... save the money and get top rate glass. The cheaper stuff is slower, heavier, and usually has so many aberrations they aren't worth shooting with.

Personally, I like primes. But I know in some settings (like weddings) it's far easier to shoot with a good zoom. In my bag of tricks I have a 24mm f/1.4, a 50mm f/1.4 and a 28-105mm f/3.5... I *really* want to replace that zoom with a 24-70mm f/2 and a 135mm f/2 prime.

Anyway, I digress... I haven't had time to shoot anything in ages, so it doesn't matter much, I suppose.

*sigh*

groove:
Yeah, I don't know that I've ever talked about photography here... but I am into it--or was, back before school. smile

I hear you about the expensive glass, and you're right, for wedding stuff, the cheaper stuff will be just fine. My love of primes comes from the fact that I actually used to shoot *motion* photography... I had my own Super 16 kit with a set of Zeiss primes. Good god, I loved those lenses.

Anyway, I sold that gear a while ago to help pay for my new education, being a tool for the man.

Hehehe. smile
