Ok so today was rough...
A couple brought a new patient (12 yr old male german shepherd) with no apparent ailments... to be put to sleep. I freak out when people put animals down for no reason..so I spoke with the vet. The dog was licking her face as she said "Well, then take him home!" I was like... "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" As if I can take on another animal!!!! Then she said if I didn't take it they'd have to put it down. ... I lost it.. I started bawling. They put the dog to sleep. It was my fault. They killed him because I couldn't take him and because the parents were stupid. GRRRR! I know he was 12. I know he was old.... but JEEZ!!!!!!! Poor baby.... frown

Putting animals to sleep is always such a sad thing. I remember when my first pet was put to sleep, and the way it was explained to me... It never fully made sense until I realized that, as far as I can tell, it's the fault of people who won't get their animals spayed or neutered. As much as I love keeping cats and dogs as pets, how they extend our life and make for wonderful companions in a way that other people just can't for some people, the population has to be controlled or the already overburdened people who run shelters and clinics are forced to put more and more down. If we want to keep animals as pets, its our responsibility to care for them in the way that makes the most, functional sense. I hope you don't have to do too many more of these, and that people wise up in a hurry. It's folks like you that are forced to shoulder the responsibilities of pet owners that want the benefits of owning a pet, but not that of caring for another life! And I, on behalf of the rest of us, thank you for that.

That's just silly. it isn't your fault. Get a grip girl! Your vet really should have been advising them of the alternatives. Also, there really should be laws against just randomly putting down or killing animals.
