I am leaving for France tomorrow morning. I am so excited about the harvest. I know next to nothing about wine making and this should be a massive education!
I have spoken with UK immigration several times this week, and there is no way that I can get a work visa. I would need a degree or massive quantities more experience. I have decided to stay in France (after a week post harvest return to cook some posh food for a good friend's birthday, as promised) and take a language course, followed by an attempt to work at a two michelin star restaurant in Paris. The French work cooks like slaves, 14 hour days etc.
This feels right in my gut, more right than anything I've done since my arrival here. It will change, improve and expand me more than two years in Berkshire possibly could have, even if The Fat Duck would have looked better on my CV. It may still be in the future, a few years from now.
My internet at the winery will be intermittent at best, so I won't be around much, I'll send updates as I can. I am going to start communicating with those that matter via letters, it should be nice, it's been ages since I sent and received letters on a regular basis. Don't miss me too much.
